While soft goat fibres existed across Central Asia, it was Kashmir, India, that became the birthplace of cashmere as a finished luxury fabric — elevating raw fibre into an object of global desire.

India’s role in cashmere history is not simply that of a source of fibre, but as the place where cashmere was first refined into luxury garments, centuries before the fibre became globally commercialised. The first documented luxury cashmere shawls in world history were Kashmiri.

When European traders first encountered these shawls, they carried the name home with them. “Cashmere” is derived directly from “Kashmir”. A legend born in these valleys that has never left them.

The extraordinary quality of Indian cashmere is inseparable from the extreme environment in which its goats survive. Three conditions — altitude, cold, and sparse grazing — combine to produce a fibre impossible to replicate anywhere else on earth.

High Altitude

Himalayan terrain above 4,000 metres forces the goat’s body to develop a denser, more insulating undercoat simply to survive. The altitude is the foundation of cashmere’s warmth. These qualities cannot be recreated at lower elevations.

Severe Winter
Temperatures

Temperatures regularly drop to −40°C. To endure, the goat grows an ultra-fine, ultra-dense inner coat. The harshness of the Himalayan winter is directly responsible for the softness of the fibre it produces in spring.

Sparse Grazing
Conditions

Limited vegetation and difficult foraging conditions naturally restrict herd sizes and slow fibre production — preserving the fibre integrity that industrial-scale production in other regions cannot match.
